What makes something a legacy is seeing it live on possibly stronger than before after it has gone.
Two days ago, my dad and I were watching a tribute on TV to the Great Man that is Muhammed Ali and I finally saw the Rumble in the Jungle and Thriller in Manila. It was then that I understood why he was the legend of boxing.
But it seemed that Muhammed Ali had just as strong a presence out of the ring as he did in it. A prolific public speaker and a strong political icon, he is considered to be one of the most significant and celebrated icons of the 20th Century.
Here are some of the best quotes from the champ that we should learn to live by:
“FLOAT LIKE A BUTTERFLY, STING LIKE A BEE!”
“I HATED EVERY MINUTE OF TRAINING BUT I SAID ‘DON’T QUIT. SUFFER NOW, SUFFER NOW AND LIVE THE REST OF YOUR LIFE AS A CHAMPION'”
“WHAT YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT, YOU ARE BECOMING”
“IT’S THE REPETITION OF AFFIRMATIONS THAT LEADS TO BELIEF. AND ONCE THAT BELIEF BECOMES A DEEP CONVICTION, THINGS BEGIN TO HAPPEN”
“IMPOSSIBLE IS JUST A BIG WORD THROWN AROUND BY SMALL MEN WHO FIND IT EASIER TO LIVE IN THE WORLD THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN THAN TO EXPLORE THE POWER THEY HAVE TO CHANGE IT. IMPOSSIBLE IS NOT A FACT. IT’S AN OPINION. IMPOSSIBLE IS NOT A DECLARATION. IT’S A DARE. IMPOSSIBLE IS POTENTIAL. IMPOSSIBLE IS TEMPORARY. IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING”
“I AM THE GREATEST. I SAID THAT EVEN BEFORE I KNEW I WAS”
